How Does Licensing Work for Marching Band Music?

When marching bands modify existing music arrangements or use source material not in the public domain, they need licensing. Performing purchased stock arrangements as written (that do not use copyrighted material) or making minor modifications like transposing parts does not require licensing.

What About Music Purchased from Marching Monk?

When you purchase marching band music from Marching Monk, if the music includes source material that is not in the public domain, you must obtain a license from the publisher to perform it legally.

For example, the show “American Dream” is comprised of music by Joshua V. Hinkel but also includes “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” is not in the public domain and requires permission from the publisher to use it in this show. No additional permission is needed for Hinkel’s compositions, as he created this music specifically for marching band, and those rights are included with your purchase from Marching Monk.
